Description: For this activity we started my listing to the read aloud of The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. The story of a little girl whose art teacher helps her to develop a 'can do' attitude after she draws a dot. We were then asked to experiment with coffee filters and multiple supplies that would color them: crayons, oil pastel crayons, water color, markers, and many more. By doing this project, we learned that you start with your "dry" materials and create a design or note that will then appear when you apply water and colors. This project was a great way to show how art can be integrated into language arts.
Extension Activity: This was a great beginning project that you could start at the lower elementary grade and continue through the upper elementary by making small changes to advance it. One idea for an extension activity would be for students to create these dots with positive messages or words on them. After doing so we would hang then around the school or hallways and have "spots of kindness" all around the school. This could be done on or close to World Kindness Day as an activity on how to show kindness in your community!
My dot featured a sun that was drawn in white crayon and yellow oil pastel crayons. Then I created a red outline in marker, which was then smudged into the warm colors when using water colors.
